Dear Reader,
40 Days is an invitation for you to fast and pray over the course of 5 weeks for a revival of God’s presence and work in your own life and in First Baptist Church Clinton.
Prayer, by its very nature, causes us to slow down and reveals our priorities. As a church, prayer is our declaration of dependence on God instead of ourselves. It is our response to grace, a corporate collective cry for God to move in the midst of our sin. Prayer is something that challenges our mind, which is prone to wonder and daydream as we try to bring our hearts to the Lord. It is easy to lose focus in our 24/7 connected world, and thus, we struggle to find consistency in prayer. But so did the disciples when Jesus took them into the garden to pray before His trial (Matthew 26:40).
As with most things in life that challenge us, the results are also beyond our imagination. As the disciples discovered, more could be accomplished through prayer than they could have ever dreamed, and Jesus said we, through prayer, would do even greater things than He himself had done (John 14:12-14).
Some might want to practice the biblical discipline of fasting to help focus their time of prayer. This may include denying yourself of food, or it could include a fast from television or media for a season. Fasting heightens your hunger for God and your focus on Him, but it also provides you with additional time to pray. Fasting and prayer go together. An excellent resource that can introduce you to the purpose and practice of fasting is John Piper’s book A Hunger for God. It is available free online at www.desiringgod.org or you can purchase a copy at Amazon.
It is our hope and prayer that during these next 40 Days God will increase your hunger for His presence and power, and your faith will expand to believe Him for what He wants to do in your life and in the church.
In Him,
Jim Gifford
