March 10 – Devotion

Date: March 10

Scripture: Psalm 62

For God alone my soul waits in silence;
from him comes my salvation.
He alone is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.

Psalm 62:1-2, ESV

Once God has spoken;
twice have I heard this:
that power belongs to God,
and that to you, O Lord, belongs steadfast love.

Psalm 62:11-12, ESV

Psalm 62 was probably penned by David, but it could be written today by any Christian who has placed his or her complete trust in the Lord. As Christians, we know the personal comfort and hope that rests in God alone. As verse 7 states, “On God rests my salvation and my glory;/my mighty rock, my refuge is God” (ESV).

I have always enjoyed singing the songs that include the words “rock,” “fortress,” and “salvation.” The use of words or phrases in the songs such as “The solid rock” or “A mighty fortress” have often assisted in creating an image in my mind of something unmovable and unshakeable. These mental pictures must have been what the psalmist and later the songwriters were trying to convey through their words. God, through faith in Jesus Christ, is the only way to salvation and the only way to secure the confidence exhibited by the psalmist in this chapter.

This psalm also expresses the need of the writer to share what God had made evident to him. He stated that God had spoken one thing, but that he had heard two things. One was the fact that God is strong and powerful. The other was that God is loving. What more can one ask for? We have a God who has saved us. We have a God who is strong and provides a relationship that cannot be shaken. And finally, we have a God who is loving and supportive each and every day.

Prayer for Today: Lord, thank you for being my rock and my salvation, a fortress never failing. Thank you for the love you give to me and the knowledge that I cannot be shaken if I maintain my trust in you.
