March 12 – Devotion

Date: March 12, 2017

Scripture: Psalm 64

Let the righteous one rejoice in the Lord
  and take refuge in him!
Let all the upright in heart exult!

Ps. 64:10

The psalmist David pours out his heart to God in Psalm 64. He recognizes the magnitude of his enemies: the “throng of evildoers” “who whet their tongues like swords,” “shooting from ambush at the blameless” and will “hold fast to their evil purpose” (vv. 2-5). Their wits and words often become weapons to do their evil intent.

Yet as he sees his enemy and their war waged against him, David prays. As we look at the armor of God, as sons and daughters of God we cannot overestimate the strength and power available to us in prayer. Prayer unlocks the power we have in Christ. God already knows what we are going through, but he wants us to pour out our honest, hurting hearts to him. In those moments when we confess our weaknesses, God makes us strong through his strength alone.

We are called to rejoice in the Lord and take refuge in him. Many times, I do not want to choose praise and thanksgiving during a challenging circumstance. But the moments when I do are most rewarding. We are instructed to be thankful in every circumstance. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus” (ESV).

We can be thankful because God has showered us with his grace. When our hearts are overflowing with thankfulness, we are filled with a contagious joy. Through the battles of our lives, just as David cried out to God, so should we. We can bring glory due his name because the battle has already been won, and Jesus sits victoriously at the right hand of God! Praise His Name!

Prayer for the Journey: Father, help me remember that the words and plots of other human beings can never equal your almighty power.
