March 23 – Devotion

Date: March 23, 2017

Scripture: Psalm 75

But it is God who executes judgment,
putting down one and lifting up another.
(Ps. 75:7)

The psalmist begins by praising God and then moves to a repetition of several key phrases that emphasize God’s power. He ends by praising God again, remembering that God is the ultimate judge of the wicked and the righteous.

As we read the Psalm, we are reminded who the true judge is. The psalmist recognizes that God is the only one who brings power to someone. This is sometimes a hard fact to come to terms with. In America, we are taught from a young age that what YOU do and the effort YOU put forth will take you places in life. While a strong work ethic is important, it can lead to a self-righteous attitude. This psalm prompts us to understand that all power we receive on Earth comes from God. It is he who judges, exalts, and brings down. Having a position of power and recognizing that power is from God reminds us to act responsibly in our position of authority.

We have all felt power over someone or something. This power can sometimes feel like a heavy responsibility. We can take comfort from this psalm because it reminds us that God is absolutely in control. In a way, this serves as a gut check, showing us that our position is not from our own doing but because we serve the God who exalts and takes down. So whether we are in a position of power or we feel like we are at the bottom of a totem pole, we can rest in the fact that God is always in control.

Prayer for the Journey: God, remind me of your infinite power over my situation and position. Help me to rely on you and not only on my own abilities. Allow me to be comforted by knowing I am a child of the God, the One who lifts up the righteous.
